Online-Workshop: „Interpreting geophysical observables with the Geophysical Model Generator“

Aug 31, 2023 | 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM

The wealth of data that has come from the AlpArray and 4DMB initiatives now allows us to develop three-dimensional subsurface models of the Alps with an unprecedented resolution. However, creating consisting models still remains challenging, due to technical issues (e.g. different data formats, spatial resolutions, etc.) or discrepancies between different data sets. Within the scope of MB4D, we have therefore recently developed the “Geophysical Model Generator” (GMG), which is aimed to assist the generation of consistent three-dimensional subsurface models. To do so, GMG provides a set of tools to import different data sets (e.g. Moho maps, tomography, seismicity, receiver functions), convert them to a common data format and to process them further (e.g. create vote maps of seismic tomographies, create vertical and horizontal profiles at arbitrary positions etc.).

To further assist the comparison and interpretation of different data sets, we have developed a graphical user interface (see the figure below) which allows to load the combined data from vertical profiles and to jointly interpret them with the goal of obtaining subsurface 3D geometries.

In this online workshop, I would like to present this graphical user interface and to introduce its functionalities. The workshop will be a hands-on workshop where we will work with existing datasets to experience the workflow of data comparison and interpretation and to enable the participants to independently follow this workflow.

The workshop will take place on August 31st, starting at 10.00 CET. Registered participants will receive a link to the online meeting in the days before. The workshop schedule is planned as follows (but is quite flexible to adjust to the needs of the participants):

10.00 General introduction 10:15 Introduction to the GMG 10:30 Introduction of the GUI 11:00 Hands-on activity 12:30 break 14:00 Hands-on activity 17:00 End

If you are interested in participating, please register for the workshop by sending an e-mail with the subject “GMG GUI workshop” to marcel.thielmann(at)uni-bayreuth.de.
